The Patrick Payne-trained Wings Of Song made the trip from Victoria to Tasmania on Friday to claim victory in the Listed Tasmanian Guineas (1600m).

Bred and owned by Sandy Tait and Jill Nivison, the three-year-old had Jye McNeil on board, and he wore their famous red silks and white cap to victory.

It was a tough win, with Wings Of Sing commencing moderately from gate five and racing in the back half of the field before McNeil peeled four wide with a surging run.

From there, the NSW-based Twin Hills Stud-bred filly was too strong to the line when winning the $125,000 event.

It was a hit-and-run visit by McNeill, with the 2020 Melbourne Cup-winning jockey having just one ride, and Wings of Song was subsequently the best-backed, firming from $4.80 into $2.90 favourite.

“I began a bit slow, which put me behind the eight ball,” McNeil said after the race.

“From the 1200m mark, where I was able to get three wide with cover, I was confident she would run well.

“She stuck out the mile well, so 2000m won’t be an issue.”

Wings Of Song is impeccably bred, being out of Tortoni, making her a half-sister to Group 2 Moonee Valley Vase winner Cherry Tortoni (x Night Of Thunder) and the Stakes-placed Jenny Jerome (x Churchill).

Tortoni (x Strategic) – who has had five of her progeny win – is a half-sister to the 13-time Group 1 winner, and Tait and Nivison-bred Tie the Knot, who won $6.2 million during an illustrious career.

Also, a half-sister to the Listed winners Hood (Shamardal) and Dream Ballad (Singspiel), Tortoni is the final foal of the Group 1 One Thousand Guineas winner Whisked (x Whiskey Road).

The excitement will continue for connections, with Tortoni having an unraced two-year-old colt by Too Darn Hot on the ground, while after foaling a St Mark’s Basilica filly in September, Tortoni was covered by Churchill.

Wings Of Song has now started eight times for three wins and three placings, earning connections over $120,000.
