Discreet Miss out for bold showing in Randwick Highway

After picking a 20/1 winner last week, Thunderbet’s Johnny ‘Highway’ Patton is back today for the 1200m Class Three Highway Handicap at Royal Randwick.

It’s another exciting Highway this week, with most of the horses lightly raced and getting fitter into their preparations.

Randwick is a soft five, and I’ve looked for horses this week who get a genuine 1200m and have performed on a soft track.

Santa came early for us last week; let’s try and go out with a bang for this year. Happy New Year.

My first pick is Discreet Miss ($8). The space in between runs this preparation is the key for this horse as it has had two wins at Nowra and one-third in a Highway since October.

It should get the run of the race from barrier two with a heap of pace in the race.

The 4YO mare’s last start was three weeks ago when it won the Belle of the South at Nowra, and it drops 6kg for today’s event.

Robyn Freeman stays on board, and the distance and soft track are right down its alley. The Michelle Ritchie runner should be in the finish.

My second pick is Gallant Star ($3.10), trained by Brett Robb, who knows how to win a Highway.

This horse is entitled to be the favourite. The 4YO gelding is absolutely flying at the moment.

Its latest start was early in December, when it ran second in an 1100m Highway.

The Dubbo galloper has had six starts, the distance will suit, and he loves a soft track (5:2-1-2).

He’ll be hard to beat.

Bomarea ($3.20) is my third pick. Its last start was two weeks ago when winning a Class 3 Highway over 1000m in a very good time at Randwick.

The only query is the soft track and distance, but it will run them off their feet if it can.

The ‘Each way play’ is Lady Kah ($34). She’s been racing in harder company and goes into this much fitter third-up.

Trained by Longmire stable at Goulburn, this horse will appreciate the drop back in class.

Only two starts ago, she had no luck at Kembla Grange, getting beaten by Tap and Run, who has won since.

Last start, she raced at Goulburn and got out of its ground. She drops 6 ½ kilos going into this with Hannah William’s claim. I think she is at massive odds.
