The $200,000 Goulburn Cup always attracts a quality field and it’s no different this year, with the feature race being held on Sunday at Goulburn Race Club.

Heading the market and weights is Terry Robinson’s Art Cadeau, which is shooting for five straight wins.

The talented gelding is yet to miss a top two placing in 12 starts and you would expect that record to continue when he arrives here second up (2:1-1-0) off that great The Kosciuszko win (0.2 lengths).

Last prep, Steely was on fire, boasting four wins from eight starts, the most recent being a 3.8 length demolition of a BM88 field over 1800m.

The Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou team elected to bring the gelding to Goulburn first up (4:2-0-0) with no trial, therefore I’ll lean to the place as he has good form over the 1400m (4:2-0-1).

Another city trained runner coming in first up is Kirwan’s Lane, which contested a couple Listed races to close out last campaign finishing 1.9 lengths back in the Winter Championship Final and 7th (beaten 2.9 lengths) in the Winter Challenge.

This race is a touch short of his best distance, but he is one for the exotics.

Al Mah Haha is back to defend the Cup on a track where he is two-from-two. He also won the 2019 SERA Country Champs Qualifier at Goulburn.

Tash Burleigh has him in good form, having run back-to-back placings in Saturday metro grade.

Two starts back he finished third, only 1.3 lengths back of Love Tap, which recently contested The Golden Eagle.

Luvoir had a tough run upon resumption in the Group 3 Sydney Stakes running three-wide with no cover, eventually finishing 6.5 lengths back last.

I think the Richard & Michael Freedman-trained five-year-old can bounce back second up (4:1-0-1) and over 1400m, he’s never missed the money in three starts.

2020 Winner: Al Mah Haha ridden by Shaun Guymer and trained by Tash Burleigh.

A little about Goulburn

Racing fans and travellers can make the trip to the Southern Tablelands of NSW and get enticed by the classic country charm that Goulburn offers.

Goulburn is a proudly historic community, which is reflected through the beautiful buildings throughout the town.

Goulburn is only a two-hour trip away from Sydney, which makes it the perfect gateway from the busy city lifestyle, with visitors able to enjoy the best of the local cuisine at the lovely cafes and restaurants.

It was declared Australia’s first inland city in 1863 and today it’s known as the fine wool capital of the world with the ‘Big Merino’ standing on Goulburn’s fringe to symbolise this.

There were concerns around the town’s economy when Goulburn was bypassed in 1992 but it is so much more than a tourist stopover.

Visitors can take in the beautiful scenery of the town and region at the Rocky Hill Memorial and Museum, Bungonia National Park and Wollondilly River. Or, they taste some delicious wine at the Kingsdale Wines and Bungonia Creek Wines.

Goulburn also has a thriving arts culture as it plays home to the Lieder Theatre Company and Goulburn Regional Art Gallery and hosts many festivals such as the Australian Blues Music Festival and Steampunk Victoriana Fair.

The town houses a number of important government agencies including the NSW Police Academy and Goulburn Gaol, NSW’s only Supermax and Australia’s highest security prison.
