The Clarence River Jockey Club will kick off their July Winter Racing Carnival on Sunday (July 3), with the Grafton Cup Prelude meeting set to keep punters and patrons well entertained.

The always popular race day leads into the South Grafton Cup ON the following Sunday (July 10) before the club prepares to host three race meetings in five days.

In an action-packed week for everyone involved, the Ramornie Handicap race day (July 13) and Grafton Cup race day (July 14) turns out to be a massive two-day Northern Rivers racing festival, while racegoers get to wind down at the Maclean Cup race day (July 17).

While Preludes to the Grafton Cup and Grafton Guineas will be held at Clarence River Jockey Club on Sunday, headlining the program is the $29,000 John Carlton, which is a quality held over the 1190m journey.

The Stephen Bennett-trained Exclusive ($61) won the John Carlton Cup in 2020 when beating the likes of Nothingforthepress and Our Dasha, before finishing second in 2021 when beaten a nose by Northern Knight.

After a stint with Lee Freedman, the six-year-old returns to Bennett’s care and will be first-up from a 21-week spell in the feature and Justin Huxtable takes the ride.

Gogol ($3.50) is the well-supported favourite from the Les Kelly yard, after being backed in from a $6 opening quote.

The five-year-old is an eight-time winner from 24 starts, and most recently finished second at the Gold Coast an open 1200m event.

The Brett-Dobson-trained Parksville ($6) should be ready to fire first-up and Tara Jasmine ($8) from the John Shelton yard needs to be respected on her best form.

Racing at Grafton kicks off early, with the first event to jump at 11.10am, and a nine-race-card will round out at 4.25pm.
