Jody Hughes knows what it takes to win a Condobolin Picnic Race Club Cup, after winning the race on the Trevor Sutherland trained Tearful Kitty in 2019.
The Canberra jockey will get a rare chance to lift the Cup in successive seasons, when she jumps aboard likely race favourite, Southern Gamble in the $8000 feature event later today.
Riding for Doug Gorrel, Hughes was thankful for the opportunities she had recieved since moving back to Canberra late last year.
“I’ve had a fair bit of success for Doug (Gorrel) in the past and since moving back to Canberra, I’ve ridden a bit of work for him here and there,” she said.
“His team is going great and this horse has been in good form.
“Hopefully things go right for him (and) with a bit of luck we might just take home the cup.”
Southern Gamble is a proven picnic performer, having won the Binda PicnicCootamundra PicnicGrenfell Picnic and Boorowa Picnic Race Club Cups last year before finishing a gallant fifth in the NSWPRA Picnic Championship final at Dubbo Turf Club in September.
The eight-year-old has since placed in the Lockhart Picnic and Burrangong Picnic Race Club Cups this season before winning the Tumbarumba Turf Club Cup earlier this month and placing in the Tumut Turf Club Cup last weekend.
Despite the Casino Prince Gelding boasting an intimidating record, Hughes admitted there would be good competition in the feature event.
“Rodney Robb is always hard to beat at the picnics,” she said. The talented jockey also spruiked another of her chances for Gorrel, suggesting she might have a couple of genuine winning chances.
“I like my other ride for Doug (Gorrel) in Chief of Arlington,” she said.
“My other rides for the day aren’t without their chances, if they produce some of their better form.”
For those punters hoping to catch Hughes in action, the first race at Condobolin kicks off at 1.55pm and the cup will be run at 4.25pm.
