Magic Millions success for Cody Morgan

Cody Morgan was the toast of racing on Saturday, with the Tamworth trainer winning the $500,000 Magic Millions Country Cup at the Gold Coast with talented sprinter Ezekeil.

Combining with leading Victorian hoop Jamie Kah, the pair won the first Magic Millions victory of their careers with Ezekeil running away from his rivals to record a 3.5 length win.

It is no doubt the biggest win of Morgan’s career, and he was justifiably emotional after the in.

“Luke Murrell (from Australian Bloodstock) said I’d cry and he’s pretty right too,” Morgan said in an interview with Magic Millions.
“It’s the biggest win for us and all the ownership group and I can’t thank Australian Bloodstock enough.”
“It’s definitely the biggest race I’ve won, and you don’t get these opportunities every day at Tamworth.”

It was no mean feat having Ezekeil ready for the rich country-only feature, and Morgan said everything came together despite the wet weather leading to the eventual postponement of the Magic Millions race day after only two events.

“We’ve been up here all week, Jamie (Kah) galloped him on Tuesday, and she got off and I could see that she was really keen on, so it’s been a long four days,” Morgan said.
“He’d never won on a (soft) track like that but I’m probably very fortunate that it was race one because I don’t think he would’ve handled it as well later in the day.”

Only lightly-raced, Ezekeil needs time between runs as he doesn’t eat up the best after races, but a patient Australian Bloodstock ownership group have been rewarded during a successful 15-start career.

The four-year-old has speed to burn, winning the Armidale Newmarket in track record time on December 11, while he has won five times, placed on five further occasions, and has now earned just shy of $400,000 in prizemoney after Saturday’s emphatic victory, and Morgan was just thankful for the opportunity to train him.

“They (Australian Bloodstock) have been fantastic to me – they race horses at the highest level but they support me every week and every day for that matter so I can’t thank them enough” Morgan said.

The remainder of the Gold Coast Magic Millions meeting is scheduled to be run on Thursday.
