Picnic Champion Series final postponed

The 2022 Picnic Champion Series final that was scheduled to be held at Coonamble on Sunday has been postponed.

Coonamble was hammered by rain this week, and as per a Racing NSW statement released earlier on Saturday, stewards have elected to run the showcase meeting on Wednesday, weather permitting.

“Racing NSW advises the Coonamble meeting scheduled for Sunday, 9th October 2022 has been postponed until Wednesday 12 October 2022,” the statement read.

“The Coonamble track has been deemed unsuitable for racing following 30mm in the past 24 hours, 39mm in the past 48 hours and some further showers expected today (Saturday).

“However, the weather forecast improves from tomorrow through to the middle of next week.

“Racing NSW stewards will again inspect the track early next week.”

However, the 2022 Picnic Champion Series final will not be run on Wednesday, with Racing NSW stating they want to run the $50,000 final on a weekend day.

“The Picnic Championship race scheduled as race 4 on the Coonamble meeting postponed from Sunday 9 October 2022 to Wednesday 12 October 2022, will not be run at this meeting,”

“The race will be rescheduled to a forthcoming weekend meeting, enabling picnic riders to take their mounts.

“As such, eight races will be run on Wednesday’s Coonamble program.”

The NSW Picnic Racing Association had not been contacted by Racing NSW at the time of publishing, but secretary Deidre Adam was hopeful of getting the picnic final run as soon as possible.

“We haven’t been told anything yet,” Adam said.

“These trainers have had their horses in work for longer than ever, and some will be wanting to go for a spell, so we need to get it over and done with as soon as we can.

“I don’t know what Racing NSW are thinking they will do with the race, but I would like to see it go to Coonabarabran (October 23) but we will have to wait and see what Racing NSW has to say.”
