Punters backing two roughies in Canberra Mile market

The $150,000 Affinity Electrical Canberra Mile will be run and won at Thoroughbred Park today, and punters have found two they like in the 1600m Open Handicap.

The Barbara Jones, Paul and Matt Jones-trained Manderboss (Quayde Krogh) has been backed in from $13 into $5.50, and the Matthew Dale-trained Mystery Shot (Brock Ryan) has been crunched from an opening quote of $17 into $6.50.

Manderboss deserves to have support, with the Canberra galloper returning to his home track after a sensational last-start win on the Sapphire Coast Cup on January 29.

Prior to that effort, he was racing well in town, and there is no reason to think he isn’t up to a race of this standard.

Mystery Shot is an interesting commodity, with the former Victorian having only his third start in NSW.

Racing for Lindsey Smith, Mystery Shot won his first five starts, including three on the trot at Caulfield, while he won six of his first eight starts, but he hasn’t greeted the judge first since March of 2021.

Since joining Dale’s team, his first two starts in town haven’t been a lot to right home, but there appears to be some stable confidence as connections eye a win in the Canberra Mile.

In contrast to the two market movers, race-favourite For Valour (Winona Costin) from the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott yard has been a tad easy, drifting from $3.40 to $3.80.

The last-start Canterbury winner is up in grade, but he looks a progressive type, and he will be running them along for a long way in this eight-furlong event.

On the punting front, don’t forget there is $74,000 up for grabs today for Canberra Racing Club Members.

Readers that are members can enter the tipping competition before 3:25pm on Friday for their chance to win. To enter click here

It will be a big day at Thoroughbred Park, with $390,000 prize money on offer and plenty happening off track.

Gates open at 12.30pm, the first race is at 1.35pm, there is the Underground Spirits Gin Lawn, and live music from 4pm.
