Stefano Cherchi hospitalised following Canberra fall

Stefano Cherchi.

Jockeys Stefano Cherchi, Shaun Guymer and Jeff Penza were involved in a gut-wrenching incident in race three at Canberra on Wednesday.

Contesting the 1600m Class One Plate, Cherchi’s mount, Hasime, fell and impeded Dunjenni and Epic Statement, which dislodged Shaun Guymer and Jeff Penza, respectively.

Guymer and Penza walked away from the incident, but according to Racing NSW, “Cherchi has sustained a head injury and will be transported to hospital.”

The NSW Jockey’s Association confirmed that Cherchi had sustained a ‘significant head injury’ and internal bleeding, with doctors assessing the full extent of the injury.

Cherchi’s family is reported to be flying in from Italy.

The remainder of the Canberra program went ahead.

NSW Country and Picnic Racing’s prayers are with the 23-year-old Italian jockey.
