The Young Turf Club might have missed out on the chance to celebrate their centenary year in 2020 due to the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic meaning their meeting was transferred to Wagga, but that won’t stop the club celebrating 100 years of racing later this month.
Toompang Racecourse will host a six-race-program on May 22, a meeting that features the Young Hotel/South West Slopes Credit Union Young Cup and an enthralling card of Southern Districts racing.
Club representative and race day caller, Stuart Maxwell, was looking forward to the meeting, and hoped to see a big crowd enjoying the racing and festivities.
“It will be a great day,” Maxwell said.
“We missed last year, so we can technically call this our 100th year and it would be good to see the community supporting the day.”
The Young Cup meeting is a traditional race day, with the club happy for the horses and racing to take centre stage.
“The racing is our focus, and we don’t really have fashions, but we have a best dressed man and best dressed lady and have been donated $100 from The Loft and Bruce’s Menswear as prizes for those winners,” Maxwell said.
“We have a framed picture of Winx that will be raffled, and we will run a free bus from the Young Hotel that leaves before the first race and takes you out to the ground and brings you back after the last.
“We have bookmakers for interstate and local racing, plus a coffee cart and the Lions Club BBQ.”
Maxwell and the Young Turf Club committee were imploring people to turn out and enjoy a good day.
“The meeting promotes local racing, but without people and without funding we aren’t going to survive,” Maxwell said.
“We want racegoers to have a great day out, and the way the weather is at the moment, it looks like we are in for a good day.”
